My Favourite Sex Toy and Masturbation Books

There are a lot of sex toy and masturbation books which talk about the mechanics of sex toys and masturbation, how to masturbate properly and how to pleasure a partner for example. However, sometimes I just want to read about sex toys and masturbation for fun, not science.

In partnership with Noveltrove.Com who are an up and coming erotica website, I decided to celebrate National Masturbation Month by putting together a few of my favourite sex toy stories and masturbation memoirs. However, these books are not all erotica based stories. Some of the titles featured touch upon sex and masturbation as their characters develop throughout the storyline. My reasons for featuring them can be found within the discussion of the book.

Summer Sisters by Judy Blume

Summer Sisters by Judy Blume

In Summer Sisters, Judy Blume ‘touches’ upon masturbation in this coming of age story of two best friends, Caitlin and Vix. Switching from her usual genre of young adult and teenage fiction, Judy added more adult themes in Summer Sisters and created one of my favourite books of all time. Hugely influential on me as a teen, I learnt a lot about the power of the clitoris and masturbation whilst reading this story. Another ground breaking story in which the topic of masturbation is addressed for a teenage audience is Deenie. A story of a young girl who is pushed into modelling by an overbearing mother. During an appointment, an issue with her spine is discovered and it appears that Deenie’s modelling career is over. With her future plans dashed, Deenie embarks upon a journey of self-discovery and finds other ways in which to love her body – literally!

Front cover of ‘Lady Chatterley’s Lover’, Penguin edition, 1960

Lady Chatterley’s Lover by DH Lawrence

Not conventionally about masturbation, but a good raunchy tale at least. In Lady Chatterley’s Lover, Mellor’s shares his dismay at the boldness of a lover, who used to masturbate during sex to orgasm. Talking in great detail, he debates female self-pleasure and despairs about his inability to bring her to climax through intercourse alone. More of a topical piece about masturbation than titillation, but an interesting read for those who want to explore an alternative view of masturbation in literature.

Wideacre

Philippa Gregory Wideacre

Far from a traditional romance novel, Gregory’s debut novel Wideacre was a pleasure to read from start to finish. Crazed with ambition, the fearless and vindictive Beatrice Lacey will stop at nothing to keep control of the family estate – even seducing her own brother Harry. Within the book there are BDSM themes and the use of props and it is her willingness to participate which sets Beatrice apart from other lovers, thus ensuring that her brother cannot relinquish the hold she has on him. This is a brilliant book and well worth a read.

Sex Toy Tales by Ann Seaman and Cathy Winks

Sex Toy Tales by Anne Semans and Cathy Winks

Perfect for those who want to read about sex toys but have a short attention span, Sex Toy Tales by Anne Seamans and Cathy Winks is an anthology that features 35 tales of titillation.  A mixture of fiction and non-fiction, these stories really do keep the pages turning. With every single story featuring a sex toy, this book is the perfect read for someone who enjoys a titillating sex toy story. The sex toys featured range from high tech electronic devices, power tools and even the humble household vegetable. The featured characters are people from all different walks of life, so there is something to interest every reader.

My Not So Shameful Sex Secrets by Girl on the Net.

My Not So Shameful Sex Secrets by Girl on the Net

The multi-award winning writer and journalist doesn’t disappoint with this gritty but hilarious memoir. Starting with I didn’t listen to the lyrics of teenage kicks because I was too busy masturbating’ and following with a great journey of lust, self-pleasure, threesomes and scandalous behaviour, My Not So Shameful Sex Secrets is a great debut novel from Girl on the Net. Fun and honest, the story tackles the complexities of growing up as modern 21st century woman, feminist and secret sex adventurer. When reading this I laughed out loud, I cried and more than once, I found myself reaching for my own vibrator. This is a refreshingly explicit and very honest book and if you haven’t read it – you really should!

Girl on the Net also has a sequel available which is entitled ‘How a Bad Girl Fell in Love’. I haven’t read it yet, but it is certainly on my ‘to read’ list.

Diary of a Submissive

Diary of a Submissive by Sophie Morgan

The Diary of a Submissive is not an erotic book. It is a memoir about the sexual awakening of a well-educated, middle class feminist who enjoys being spanked and humiliated. There are no dark secrets, no illicit drug taking and she had a balanced childhood. There are times when she feels confused about her need to be degraded by her partners, and she is refreshingly honest about her feelings. However, as gritty as this account is, there are parts of the book which will leave you laughing out loud. The story features a number of BDSM toys and will shock the reader, but you won’t be able to stop turning those pages. I guarantee it!

Fifty Shades Trilogy

Fifty Shades Trilogy by EL Jamaes

The Fifty Shades Series are not my favourite books but they do contain a large collection of sex toys. From ben Wa balls to spreader bars and butt plugs, everything is covered (or uncovered) in this tale of wanton desire and unbridled lust. LoveHoney created their very own range of sex toys based on the books so amorous couples can bring their Fifty Shades fantasies to life.
