Review of the Calypso Big ‘Bro Reggae Box
Of all the restaurants in Blackburn, Calypso must be a firm favourite of mine. This canal-side Blackburn restaurant boasts beautiful evenings views, live music and fabulous food. The food is Caribbean themed and all home-made whilst the rustic theme takes you straight to the laid-back West Indian culture. However, as many Blackburn restaurants found during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, fast adaptations had to be made to ensure that businesses could continue to thrive whilst closed to public. Very quickly after lockdown, Calypso introduced a takeaway menu, complete with the addition of the Calypso Big ‘Bro Reggae Box.
What is the Calypso Big ‘Bro Reggae Box?
Whilst there are lots of other items on the Calypso Takeaway Menu, this review will focus on the Calypso Big ‘Bro Reggae Box as that was the item that we ordered. The box is a large pizza-style box which retails from £30.00 per box and contains:
- 2 BBQ chicken wings
- 2 Jerk chicken wings
- 2 Fried chicken wings
- 4 Jerk chicken strips
- 4 Fried chicken strips
- 2 Caribbean kebabs
- 2 Garlic, lime and chilli prawns
- BBQ Spare ribs
- 2 Beef Patties
- Curried chicken
- 2 Dumplings
- 2 Corn on the cob
- 2 Portions of Calypso fries
- Black bean salad
- Rice and peas
The box itself is huge and offers plenty of selection for those who like to try different things.

There are two ways to order the Calypso Big ‘Bro Reggae Box. Firstly, you can order online at the Calypso Caribbean Restaurant website or you can call the restaurant directly on 01254 261020. The takeaway service runs from Wednesday to Sunday from 3pm onwards.
My experience of ordering the Calypso Big ‘Bro Reggae Box
My first experience of ordering the Calypso Big ‘Bro Reggae Box was a non-starter. Unfortunately, I failed to ensure that I received a confirmation text or email and therefore, my order hadn’t gone through. I strongly recommend that you check for this upon ordering to avoid disappointment. However, my second attempt at ordering was more successful.
The ordering system is easy to navigate, and the takeaway menu can be found after you have chosen whether you want delivery or to collect. I always chose delivery because I am a lazy bones and much prefer to have my food delivered. The delivery system works by using time slots to ensure that orders don’t get over loaded. Card details can also be saved so subsequent orders are much easier.
Delivery of the Calypso Big ‘Bro Reggae Box was bang on time and the delivery driver was friendly and courteous. Upon handing over the box, it was quite clear that it was rammed full and it was taped down at the edges to ensure that it couldn’t be tampered with. Upon opening, we were blown away by the different choices. Everything was delicious, from the jerk chicken to the dumplings. The food was piping hot and it was so colourful and full of flavour. For two of us, there was a lot of food so I would recommend something smaller like the Lil’ Bro Reggae Box if you have a smaller appetite.
We took the time to try everything and both agreed that there wasn’t a single product that we didn’t enjoy. I loved the curry which was packed full of flavour but not too spicy, the coleslaw was fresh and light whilst the black bean salad was zesty and refreshing. The wings were moist and tasty, whilst the ribs fell off the bone and tasted delicious. The food kept well too, so if you like to keep going back to pick at the box, it still tastes lovely.
For those wanting to try something different for their weekly takeaway, I would highly recommend Calypso. The boxes are great fun and enjoyable, the price was affordable and worth the money. The restaurant also caters for children too, so it’s a takeaway that can be enjoyed with the whole family.
