Review of the The Golden Lion at Higher Wheelton
Full of the joys of completing my dissertation, my companion and I decided to celebrate by taking advantage of the Governments Eat Out to Help Out initiative. We spotted an advert on the Facebook page of the Golden Lion at Higher Wheelton and chose this venue for our celebration. Whilst most places are offering £10 off your meal, the Golden Lion are offering a three-course menu with a soft drink for just £10 each, we thought that this was a fantastic deal.
The offer runs from Monday to Wednesday from 12.00-2.30pm and 5.30-8.00pm. Customers can book a table by calling 01254 832681 or 07411725545 or they can simply walk in. We had not pre-booked and found a table easily. However, this pub can get very busy at times, so I do recommend that you call and book to avoid disappointment. The pub also has an attached car park so there is room for safe parking.
Upon entering the Golden Lion, you could see that the lines were clearly marked out at there were hand sanitisers and a thermometer for those who require extra reassurance. The pub was very clean and there was lots of space between the tables. We were shown to our table and handed single use, paper menus. All ordered were placed at the table and brought to our table. The atmosphere was extremely relaxed, and we felt very much at ease.
My companion ordered the Southern Fried Chicken Goujons and I opted for the Goats Cheese Bon Bons. They arrived quickly and looked delicious. The goujons were crisp and flavoursome whilst the bon bons were crispy on the outside but had a light and fluffy goats cheese centre. Both dishes were accompanied with dips and a side salad. After eating, the dishes were swiftly removed with minimum fuss.
For my main course, I requested the homemade lasagne and my partner chose the cheese and onion pie. It wasn’t a long wait between courses, but perfectly timed to give us a chance to rest before the next plate arrived. The lasagne was hearty, filling and very tasty. It was covered with a thick tomato sauce and lots of cheese, so it was packed full of traditional Italian flavours. The cheese and onion pie was encased in a thick crumbly pastry and filled with a selection of traditional cheeses. The chips were chunky cut crisps, and a thick gravy complimented the dish perfectly.
Unbelievably, we still had room for dessert which was Jam Roly Poly with Custard and a Sticky Toffee Pudding with Ice Cream. As with the other courses, the puddings were home made and deliciously sweet, so it satisfied those after dinner cravings. We both ate the whole lot!
Once we were ready to leave, payment was made at the bar and cost just £10 per person for all three courses and 1 Pepsi Max each.
Overall experience of the Eat Out to Help Out experience at the Golden Lion at Higher Wheelton
Providing a set menu of 3 courses and a drink for £10 is a stroke of genius for the Golden Lion. Already renowned for their high quality home cooked meals and value for money lunch menu, the Eat Out, Help Out deal provides an affordable dining experience for people at a cost that they can afford. Because all the meals are home-made, customers enjoy the same great quality that is already offered by the pub, but at a price that some struggling families will find more manageable. For myself and my companion, it was a lovely affordable treat and a relaxing afternoon out of the house.
Will we be taking advantage of this offer again? Definitely!
Do I recommend visiting the Golden Lion at Higher Wheelton? Absolutely!
